Shine360 was founded by Radiation Oncologist, Helen Shih, MD, MS, MPH, after a number of her brain tumor patients with curative conditions were active drug users (specifically addicted to heroin/opioids). Disinterested and disengaged from their brain tumor care, these patients shared a common disposition of indifference whether they lived or not, with their noncompliance placing them at significant risk of succumbing to their brain tumors. In response, Dr. Shih has taken a 360-degree approach to learning about addiction by hearing from active/recovered drug users, spending time with affected families, and interacting with first responders. Guided by this knowledge, Dr. Shih and Shine360 are dedicated to the following initiatives:

Educating on addiction

Despite the widespread increase and publicity on drug addiction, many children and adults still succumb to this disease, unaware of the risks, and families endure much parallel pain and suffering. We stress proven ideas and advice of addicts in recovery to educate and destigmatize the disease. These efforts will improve prevention and management of drug addiction.

Leading novel medical research
Drug addiction rewires how the brain works, accounting for why actions of addicts are often beyond their control. These circuitries can be modified and hopefully normalized with novel interventions like radiation therapy (Dr. Shih’s area of expertise). It is Shine360’s goal to advance research to reduce relapse. No single intervention will cure addiction, but some may make a significant difference in reducing the risk for relapse.

Advancing recovery programs
People suffering from addiction would benefit from individualized programs designed for long term recovery (programs of at least 6 to12 months) with personalization to each person’s needs that evolve over time. Recovery should embrace creating a new way of life, curbing unhealthy habits of the past, addressing individual medical, psychosocial, spiritual, and logistical issues, and guiding each person in early recovery when coping is most difficult.

Mission

Shine360 is committed to preventing and reducing active drug addiction in the community by advancing awareness, education, and research. We aim to improve the trajectory of affected individuals while supporting them towards a future of long-term recovery.

Vision

Our vision is to reduce the stigma and prevalence of drug addiction.
